LETHBRIDGE, AB – The investigation continues into the fire that burned down the former Lethbridge Hotel and nightclub Studio 54 on February 24, 2023.

The Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services report that the discovery of asbestos in the debris has slowed the removal of materials from the site. Lethbridge EMS says demolition will resume on Monday, March 6, and will continue over several days.

Officials say given the age of the building, careful removal of contaminated material is required for both public and environmental safety.

Contractors are working alongside Alberta Environment, Occupational Health and Safety and other specialists to ensure proper disposal at the Lethbridge landfill.

In the meantime, the area remains closed off to vehicles, as heavy machinery will be on site to assist in hauling away debris throughout the demolition.

Fire Prevention Officer with Lethbridge and Fire Emergency Services, Chad Mellafont, said, “Our priority, of course, is worker safety and the safety of the public while we’re conducting this operation.”

Mellafont continued, “So, we’ve taken a part of downtown that we’re going to commandeer for the process to continue, but letting everybody know that businesses are open and customers are welcome to visit the downtown area and it’s safe for the public to be down there.”

The process of demolition is weather dependent and could be slowed if cold weather or high winds roll into Lethbridge.
