LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Regional Association Canadienne-française de l’Alberta (ACFA) celebrated the official raising of the Franco-Albertan flag at Lethbridge City Hall on Friday, March 3, 2023.

The event is part of a series of events throughout March highlighting the Francophonie culture across Alberta. This year’s theme is “J’aime la francophonie albertaine”, which means I love Alberta Francophonie.

President of Lethbridge Regional ACFA Karine Daigle said, “We are very proud to celebrate a francophonie that is very inclusive, rich and vibrant.”

Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen, MLA for the Lethbridge-West Shannon Phillips and Lethbridge-East MLA Nathan Neudorf attended the event, along with hundreds of school children and community members.

Daigle says she was happy to see over 1,000 students attend the ceremony and she wants to have more french activities around Lethbridge. “I am very proud to see all the kids come to this event. It was very important that they came to give us their support,” she said. “We are working very hard at Lethbridge Regional ACFA to bring lots of french activities to the community.”

A news release from the Lethbridge ACFA states that this year the group is celebrating the 41st anniversary of the Franco-Albertan flag, and the sixth anniversary of its recognition as the first symbol of distinction under the Alberta Emblems Act.

The flag design includes a white fleur-de-lis representing the French culture and a red wild rose representing the provincial flower of Alberta.

“Our flag is a symbol that allies our community together, our culture, our tradition and our heritage. It will be waiving in the Alberta skies for the whole month of March across the province,” said Daigle.
