College and university sports recap: March 6, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The season has ended for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks basketball teams, while other student-athletes with Kodiaks Athletics prepare to conclude their seasons later this month. The University of Lethbridge (U of L) women’s rugby 7s team was in British Columbia for their last event of the season.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Kodiaks women’s basketball team hosted the 2023 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championships from Thursday, March 2 to Saturday, March 4, 2023. In their first game on Thursday, March 2, the Kodiaks lost 65-57 to the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings. Kitawna Sparks led Lethbridge College in scoring with 18 points, while Tayah Fiveland had 28 points for the Vikings. In a consolation semi-final game on Friday, March 3, the Kodiaks lost 68-63 to The King’s University Eagles, in what would be Lethbridge College’s final game of the tournament and season. Kitawna Sparks had another team-leading performance with 15 points, while Aneilia Ayotte scored 22 for the Eagles.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens won the ACAC women’s basketball championship with a 69-44 win against the University of Alberta-Augustana in the gold medal game on Saturday, March 4.

The Kodiaks men’s basketball team competed at the ACAC championships in Calgary. The tournament was hosted by Ambrose University from Thursday, March 2 to Saturday, March 4. In the Kodiaks’ first game on Thursday, March 2, they beat the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves 87-49. Christopher Schlauwitz led the Kodiaks in scoring with 14 points, Kujtim Ujkani had 16 for the Wolves. In the tournament semi-final on Friday, March 3, the Kodiaks lost 93-79 to the St. Mary’s University Lightning. Filip Karanovic scored 17 to lead Lethbridge College, while Averie Armbrister scored 27 for the Lightning. The loss set the Kodiaks on a path to the bronze medal game on Saturday, March 4 against the Keyano College Huskies. Taylor Barfuss scored 22 points to help lead the Kodiaks to a 80-72 bronze medal victory. Sean-Michael Clancey scored 20 points to lead the Huskies.

The SAIT Trojan won the ACAC men’s basketball championship with an 84-74 win against the St. Mary’s University Lightning in the gold medal game on Saturday, March 4.

The Kodiaks men’s and women’s futsal teams are set to compete at the ACAC championships. The event will be hosted by Keyano College in Fort McMurray from Friday, March 10 to Sunday, March 12.

Members of the Kodiaks indoor track team will compete at the ACAC championships from Saturday, March 18 to Sunday, March 19.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L women’s rugby 7s team competed at Thunderbird Stadium, home of the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds, for the final stop of the Canada West Rugby 7s series. On Friday, March 3, the Pronghorns lost 12-10 against the University of Alberta Pandas in their first game of the event. They followed that up with a 58-0 win against the University of Regina, and a 33-10 loss against the UBC Thunderbirds. On Saturday, March 4, the final day of the event, the U of L beat UBC2 43-5 in the consolation semi-finals before a 24-0 win against the Trinity Western Spartans to finish fifth at the event. The UBC Thunderbirds went on to capture the Canada West Rugby 7s championship with a 17-7 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes.

Meanwhile, athletes with the U of L indoor track team are gearing up for the U SPORTS championships. The event is from Thursday, March 9 to Saturday, March 11 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
