Water main break leads to evacuation near the site of the Lethbridge Hotel demolition

UPDATE 6:15 p.m. March 7, 2023: Crews continue the clean-up and roads remain closed in the area. City officials are still investigating the cause of the water main break.

ORIGINAL STORY 3:45 p.m. March 7, 2023:
LETHBRIDGE, AB –
The City of Lethbridge says a water main break in downtown Lethbridge has led to the evacuation of a building on the corner of 2 Avenue and 5 Street South.

According to city officials, the evacuated building is adjacent to the demolition site of the Lethbridge Hotel.

The water main break is impacting several businesses as well as residential properties in the area.

Affected residents are being offered transportation and alternative shelter through the Red Cross.

City officials say the cause of the water main break is currently unknown, but crews are on scene and working to repair it as quickly as possible.

As a result, a road closure is in place, which may impact Lethbridge Transit. Motorists are advised to drive with caution in the area and follow posted detours.

At this time, fire investigation and demolition continues south of the evacuated building at the Lethbridge Hotel.
