Lethbridge Police Chief’s contract extended

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Chief of the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has had his contract extended.

The Lethbridge Police Commission said on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 that the contract for LPS Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh has been extended to August 31, 2026. Mehdizadeh was officially sworn in as the LPS Chief in the summer of 2020 and has 34 years of policing experience.

Chair of the commission, Dawna Coslovi said, “Since his arrival in 2020, Chief Mehdizadeh has exhibited steadfast leadership, an open-door policy and a keen commitment to accountability.”

Coslovi said, “We have seen the creation of a more inclusive internal environment where LPS employees feel safe and continue to work hard to serve the community. The Chief has also made it a priority to enhance community relations and engagement to strengthen public trust.”

Mehdizadeh began his policing career with the RCMP in 1989. While with the RCMP, he was stationed in four provinces. Mehdizadeh has also worked with many Canadian agencies on joint force operations from coast-to-coast. In 2020, he became a Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces. Internationally, he has worked with law enforcement partners in Europe, the United States and Mexico.
