College and university sports preview: March 9, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns track and field team is on the road for the next few days, while the Lethbridge College Kodiaks futsal teams are in northern Alberta.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Both the men’s and women’s futsal teams are in Fort McMurray, Alberta this weekend. Student-athletes are competing at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Futsal Championships from Friday, March 10, 2023 to Sunday, March 12.

The Lethbridge College indoor track team will be at the ACAC Indoor Track Championships on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19. The championship event in Edmonton is co-hosted by Concordia University, Northwestern Polytechnic, The King’s University, and the University of Alberta-Augustana.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

Six student-athletes from the U of L track and field team will represent Pronghorn Athletics in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from Thursday, March 9 to Saturday, March 11. They will compete at the 2023 FFUN U SPORTS Track and Field National Championships, presented by Discover Saskatoon.

Jinaye Shomachuk will lead the women’s team. She is the current Canada West Weight Throw champion and national leader. Recently, Shomachuk earned the Women’s Performance of the Meet award at the 2023 Canada West Championships, which also took place in Saskatoon. Shomachuk will compete in the weight throw as well as in shot put. Joining her in the shot put event will be fellow Pronghorn and Canada West Rookie of the Year, Lauryn Morris. Naomi Klassen completes the throwing trio on the women’s side for the Pronghorns.

For the men’s team, three-time Canada West Weight Throw Champion and 2022 U SPORTS silver medal winner, Andrea Troschke will lead the Pronghorns. He will be joined by fellow thrower Xavier Crosby, who placed sixth at the 2022 U SPORTS Championships. Second-year Lauchlan Irish will compete in the triple jump event. He earned bronze at the 2023 Canada West Championships.

The women’s weight throw is on Thursday, March 9, with the men’s weight throw and women’s shot put on Friday, March 10. Lauchlan Irish will compete in the men’s triple jump on Saturday, March 11.
