College and university sports recap: March 14, 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a big weekend for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks futsal teams, as well as student-athletes with the University of Lethbridge (U of L) track and field team.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

Both the Kodiaks men’s and women’s futsal teams competed at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championships in Fort McMurray from Friday, March 10, 2023 to Sunday, March 12.

The women’s futsal team did not earn a win in pool play, losing 6-4 to the host Keyano College Huskies and 4-3 to the SAIT Trojans. Lethbridge College was able to rebound in the quarterfinal and defeated The King’s University Eagles 7-4. The Kodiaks then lost 5-2 in the semifinals against the Huskies. This placed Lethbridge College in the bronze medal game against the NAIT Ooks. NAIT earned the 4-3 win, which resulted in the Kodiaks placing fourth in the tournament. Olivia DePasquale was named a tournament all-star for Lethbridge, along with teammate Nikki Stahl.

The men’s futsal team placed fourth at the tournament. The Kodiaks lost 10-4 against Keyano College in their opening match and fell 6-4 against SAIT. On Saturday, March 11, the Kodiaks beat the Olds College Broncos 5-3 in a quarterfinal game. In the semifinals on Sunday, March 12, Lethbridge College lost 10-0 against Keyano College, which set up the Kodiaks for a bronze medal meeting with the Lakeland College Rustlers. The Kodiaks held a 2-1 lead at halftime but lost 4-2 to finish fourth at the championship event. Jaxon Uhl and Joel McCleod of the Kodiaks were named to the tournament all-star team.

The Lethbridge College indoor track team competes at the ACAC Indoor Track Championships in Edmonton on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19.

In other Kodiaks news, Brooke Krowchuk and Jaxon Uhl have been named the Athletes of the Week.

Both players suit up for the Kodiaks futsal teams. Krowchuk earned player of the game honours during the Kodiaks 4-3 loss against the SAIT Trojans at the ACAC futsal championships. Meanwhile, Uhl scored six goals and secured two player of the game performances during the tournament. He was also named to the tournament all-star team.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

Members of Pronghorn Athletics track and field team competed at the 2023 FFUN U SPORTS Track and Field Championship from Thursday, March 9 to Saturday, March 11. The event was in Saskatoon.

In the women’s weight throw, Jinaye Shomachuk took home gold with a throw of 18.75 metres, while her teammate Naomi Klassen finished in 10th place with a throw of 14.94 metres.

On day two of the event, Friday, March 10, Andreas Troschke won a silver medal in the men’s weight throw with a throw of 18.88 metres. His teammate Xavier Crosby finished eight with a throw of 16.87 metres. Lauryn Morris capped off day two with an 11th place finish in women’s shot put. Jinaye Shomachuk finished in 12th place.

On Saturday, March 11, Lauchlan Irish earned a bronze medal in the triple jump event with a jump of 15.00 metres.

In other Pronghorn Athletics news, a partnership has been announced between the Pronghorns, University of Lethbridge and the Lethbridge Amateur Wrestling Association (LAWA). Beginning in the Fall 2023 semester, the U of L will have a competitive amateur wrestling club. Athletes will compete within Canada West and U SPORTS. The U of L joins the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, and University of Saskatchewan in competing under the same umbrella.
