Indigenous artists wanted for City of Lethbridge commemoration project

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is seeking Indigenous artists for a commemoration project centered around Residential School Survivors, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples.

Since first launching the initiative in January 2023, city officials have extended the deadline for applications.

The chosen artists will submit proposals and conduct public engagement to gather a deeper understanding of the community’s expectations for commemoration.

The city says the initiative is also aimed at increasing public visibility and representation of Indigenous peoples.

Following public engagement earlier this year, a final draft will be presented to city staff, the Reconciliation Lethbridge Advisory Committee and the Public Art Committee.

In 2021, the City approved a series of recommendations in response to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).

One of the key recommendations of the city’s response was to carry out meaningful community engagement to support the design and creation of a commemorative project to honour the victims, survivors and families.

The budget for the project is $35,000, inclusive of consultant fees, honoraria, materials, and other expenses.

The deadline for artist submissions is March 24, 2023, and applications can be submitted electronically to Charlene.bhmhorse@lethbridge.ca
