LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge (U of L) has formally announced who will become its next chancellor.

Terry Whitehead will be the 15th person to serve in the role. This is the second time in the U of L’s 56-year history that an alumnus will be the university’s chancellor.

Whitehead has an extensive history with the U of L and said it is an “extraordinary honour” to represent his alma matter in this new capacity.

“I was a student here in 1987, is when I started, and right up until today, where I’m on the board of governors and now as chancellor and every year in between, it seems,” said Whitehead. “It’s been a wonderful time at the University of Lethbridge and I’m very grateful for the education I’ve received here.”

During Whitehead’s years as a student, he served on the University of Lethbridge Student’ Union (ULSU) council, was a sports editor for the Meliorist, and performed in fine arts productions.

ULSU President Kairvee Bhatt said she admires Whitehead’s dedication to the university.

“Terry is just the embodiment of the University of Lethbridge spirit,” said Bhatt. “He’s someone who has a continual commitment to the University, to its students, alumni and the community beyond.”

During his four-year appointment as chancellor, Whitehead will chair the U of L Senate, preside over convocation ceremonies, and advocate for new initiatives.

“I’m really, really looking forward to being on stage with the students as they graduate,” said Whitehead. “That’s such an important time in anyone’s life as they walk across the stage and receive their degree. I look forward to shaking their hands and wishing them well.”

U of L President and Vice-Chancellor Mike Mahon told Lethbridge News Now that there were several candidates for the position of chancellor, but the selection committee made a unanimous decision with Whitehead.

“Terry has this deep-rooted connection to the University of Lethbridge that, as he mentioned, goes back 35 years as both a student and then as a volunteer and donor and board member. Having a chancellor that has a deep understanding of the university, I think, is fantastic,” said Mahon.

Mahon adds that Whitehead’s familiarity with the U of L will be of vital importance as the school also welcomes its new President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Digvir Jayas, on July 1, 2023, because Jayas is not from the area.

Mahon said he believes the two will be able to work together effectively to grow and promote the university for years to come.

Whitehead will be officially sworn in as the U of L chancellor at the Spring Convocation ceremony on June 1-2, 2023.
