Lethbridge City Council declares April 7 Green Shirt Day

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge City Council has officially proclaimed April 7, 2023, as Green Shirt Day.

Following a motion presented by Mayor Blaine Hyggen at the March 21, 2023, City Council meeting, elected officials unanimously agreed to provide an exception to a decades-old decision.

In 1999, the City of Lethbridge passed a resolution stating that the mayor’s office would discontinue the practice of issuing proclamations to avoid endorsements that could cause controversy in the community.

However, this week City Council decided that due to the extraordinary cause of Green Shirt Day and the ongoing tribute to Lethbridge’s’ Logan Boulet, the resolution would be waived.

In 2018, Boulet succumbed to his injuries in the tragic Humbolt Bronco bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 others.

Prior to the collision, Boulet had become an organ donor, and through his selfless decision, he saved the lives of six other people.

In the weeks that followed, 150,000 people registered to become organ donors.

Green Shirt Day was created to honour, remember and recognize all the victims and families of the fatal crash and to continue Logan’s legacy by inspiring Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ donors.

Rather than proclaiming April 7 as a one-time declaration, Mayor Hyggen says he wants Council to consider this item annually, to continually highlight Logan’s impact.

With April 7, 2023, also landing on Good Friday, Lethbridge City Hall will be closed, which prompted Hyggen to encourage council members to wear green on Thursday, April 6 instead.
