Kodiaks men’s indoor track team captures gold at ACAC championships

EDMONTON, AB – It was a successful outing for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks indoor track teams.

The men’s and women’s teams were in Edmonton on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19, 2023 for the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) indoor track championships.

On the first day of competition, Cooper Williams placed second in the men’s 3,000-metres event. His teammate Gunnarr Gibb won gold in the men’s 300-metres. Lethbridge College’s Orin May finished with a silver in that same event. In the men’s 1,000-metres, Owen Stewart earned a bronze medal for the Kodiaks. The relay team of Gibb, May, Ethan Lizotte and Jonah Hennig won the men’s 4×200-metre race. The foursome set a new school and ACAC record with a time of 1.35.01.

On the women’s side for the Kodiaks, Rosie Bouchard won her heat in the 3,000-metres event. The Kodiaks women’s relay team of Bouchard, Rayanne Hoeflicher, Jenna Klok and Maria Boix-Frias won their heat.

On Sunday, March 19, Logan Danyluk won silver in the men’s 600-metres event, while Jonah Hennig earned bronze. Cooper Williams set a new school record in the men’s 1,500-metres with a time of 4:03.58. The Kodiaks relay team of Gibb, Danyluk, Hennig and May won the men’s 4×400-metre race and set a new Lethbridge College record with a time of 3:33.83.

For the women’s team, the foursome of Hoeflicher, Klok, Bouchard and Hannah Smith won their opening heat in the 4×400-metre relay.

The Kodiaks men’s team finished the event with 83 points, which earned them the ACAC Indoor Track Championship banner. Silver medallists the SAIT Trojans finished with 58 total points. The Kodiaks women’s team placed sixth overall at the weekend event.

Gunnarr Gibb and Cooper Williams were named to the ACAC all-conference team. Williams was also named Rookie of the Year and Kodiaks head coach Simon Schaerz was named Coach of the Year.

In other Kodiaks news, Rosie Bouchard and Orin May were awarded for their efforts at the indoor track championships with Athletes of the Week honours.
