LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has announced funding for francophone schools through its latest provincial budget.

One of the schools benefitting is École La Vérendrye in Lethbridge.

Stéphan De Loof is the Executive Director, Facility Services, Planning and Transportation for the Conseil scolaire FrancoSud. He noted that the gym at the school will undergo a modernization and expansion.

De Loof said, “The current gym at École La Vérendrye is a smaller gym. It’s smaller than the regular gyms that you would get with a school of that size nowadays.”

He noted it is not known yet how much money the provincial government will be investing in the project.

De Loof explained that the first step of the project is to send out a letter to the school board explaining it and providing cost estimates. Following this, a Request for Proposals will be issued to find a designer. Another request will later be issued for a builder.

De Loof said, “Usually, you can go between 18 and 26 months for a project to come to term, depending on the size of the project.”

The City of Lethbridge is set to provide $500,000 for the gym expansion, which is part of the Capital Improvement Program. The City of Lethbridge’s involvement means, once the gym expansion is completed, the space will be usable by all members of the community.

De Loof remarked that, “It will really be serving the community at large.” He added groups like the Lethbridge Pickleball Club could use the space for their games.

De Loof said, “The government invests money, and it should not just be used during school days…it should be used by the population at large.”

A date for construction has yet to be determined.
