LETHBRIDGE, AB – Festival Square is transitioning into spring.

As a result, the outdoor ice rink that opened on December 14, 2022, has officially been taken down.

During the 90-day run of the ice rink, Executive Director of the Downtown Lethbridge Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ), Sarah Amies said they saw thousands of people strapping on their skates.

“I would say that the ice rink was actually an unmitigated success,” explained Amies. “We have just done a little math and we figure we saw between 3,500 and 5,000 people over the winter access the skating rink.”

The rink was only open in December, January, and February and closed in early March as the weather began to warm up.

Staff at the BRZ had to hold off until March 30, 2023, to begin the de-construction of the rink as they waited for the final bits of ice to melt.

Amies confirmed they plan to reuse the materials to build the rink again next winter.

“Once the ice rink is down and stored, we are moving fully into our spring/ summer season in Festival Square,” said Amies. “Our bookings are very, very busy; particularly for June, July and August. We expect that Festival Square will be engaged more than it is not over the summer months.”

Amies went on to say that the BRZ is anticipating the return of the Farmers Market this summer on Wednesdays, along with several other events along 6 Street South.

Those interested in seeing what is coming to Festival Square over the next few months are encouraged to look at the Downtown Lethbridge BRZ website.
