Hurricanes eliminated from WHL playoffs following 5-2 loss against Moose Jaw

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes’ run in the post-season has come to an end.

On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, the Hurricanes lost 5-2 against the Moose Jaw Warriors in game four of their first round Western Hockey League (WHL) playoff series at the ENMAX Centre in Lethbridge.

The Hurricanes started off on the right track Wednesday night, securing the first goal of the night. Tyson Zimmer scored 8:50 into the first period, off an assist from Anton Astashevich. Moments later, at the 13:56 mark, the Warriors responded with a goal from Brayden Yager.

The two teams entered the second frame tied at one. Just over five minutes into the period, Maximum Wanner scored to put the visiting Warriors up 2-1. Right before the end of the second, Hayden Smith of the Hurricanes scored off an assist from Chase Pauls and Brayden Edwards to tie the game.

Moose Jaw ramped it up in the third and final period, scoring three goals.

At the 4:48 mark, Lynden Lakovic took a successful shot. His goal was followed by Denton Mateychuk’s second of the first-round series, at the 14:32 mark. Brayden Yager scored his second goal of the game, on an empty net at the 19:29 mark to secure the 5-2 victory and series sweep for the Warriors.

Moose Jaw will now await the results of the rest of the Eastern Conference first round match-ups to decide who they play in the second round of the post-season.

The three stars of the game were the Lethbridge Hurricanes’ overage players: Bryan Thomson, Jett Jones, and Cole Shepard.
