Lethbridge Hurricanes’ Thomson and Jones take next career steps

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Two overage players with the Lethbridge Hurricanes have taken the next steps in their hockey careers.

Bryan Thomson, the 2002-born goaltender, has signed an Amateur Tryout with the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League (AHL). Thomson was originally drafted by Lethbridge 37th overall in the second round of the 2017 Western Hockey League (WHL) Prospects Draft.

Over five seasons with the Lethbridge club, Thomson appeared in 117 games. He posted a record of 59-42-4-2 while setting a 3.06 goals against average, a .901 save percentage and five shutouts. Thomson finished second all-time in victories in Hurricanes history with 59. He also finished his career with the team fifth all-time in games played as a goaltender, with 117.

During the 2022-2023 season, Thomson appeared in 24 games with the team after recovering from an off-season surgery. He posted a record of 13-8-1-1 with a 2.64 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, along with three shutouts. Thomson suited up for the Hurricanes during the 2023 playoffs, in which the team was eliminated by Moose Jaw in four games. Throughout those four games, Thomson posted a 3.61 goals against average and a .887 save percentage.

Thomson was named the 2023 recipient of the Joan Kobal Memorial Award, which recognizes a player for their perseverance, dedication, and sportsmanship. He was also named a co-winner of the 2022 Herman Elfring Community Relations Award.

Thomson has reported to the Texas Stars for the remainder of the 2022-2023 season.

JETT JONES

Meanwhile, fellow overage player Jett Jones has signed with the ECHL team, the Savannah Ghost Pirates. The 2002-born forward was originally undrafted before being signed by the Hurricanes in 2018. He appeared in 222 career regular season games with Lethbridge over parts of five seasons. He accumulated 121 points, including 54 goals and 67 assists, along with 122 penalty minutes.

During the 2022-2023 season, Jones set career highs with 21 goals and 50 points over 67 games, finishing second in team scoring.

For the past two seasons, Jones has served as co-captain of the Hurricanes.

In eight career playoff games, he scored one goal and recorded two assists. Additionally, Jones was named a three-time Fan Favourite Award winner, becoming just the fourth player in team history to win the award on three or more occasions. He was also named a co-winner of the 2022 Hurricanes Hardest Working Player award, and was named the recipient of the 2022-2023 Harry Ingarfield Memorial Award as the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Jones has joined the Savannah Ghost Pirates for the remainder of the 2022-2023 season.
