Annual street sweeping program in Lethbridge starts next week

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Residents in Lethbridge are being reminded that the annual Street Sweeping campaign will start next week.

On Monday, April 17, 2023, signs will be placed in the first zone and sweeping will start in the far south end of the city on Tuesday, April 18. Street sweeping is done on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the City of Lethbridge noted all residential roadways will be completed over eight to 10 weeks.

Street sweeping takes place every spring to clean thousands of tonnes of sand, dirt and other debris from roads in Lethbridge. The City of Lethbridge said the program helps prevent that type of material from being washed into the Oldman River via the storm sewer system. It also reduces dust in neighbourhoods, making streets safer for cycling, walking, and driving.

Sand and debris that is collected gets stored and cleaned for reuse. The reconditioned sand is mixed into the following year’s sanding operations, and residual waste material is disposed of in the landfill.

The starting point of the campaign rotates every year. For 2023, the program will begin in south Lethbridge, followed by the west and north sides.

Motorists are asked to move their vehicles before 7:30 a.m. on street sweeping days. When vehicles are moved, street sweepers can do a more thorough cleaning of the roadways and neighbourhoods, according to officials. Once the designated area has been completely swept, signs will be removed and vehicles can resume parking.

The City of Lethbridge noted that parking tickets of $25 could be issued to vehicles that are not moved from the street where sweeping is taking place. Officials added that the work is weather dependent.

Residents can find out when their street is scheduled to be swept online, and can receive a 24-hour notification before sweeping begins on their street by downloading the Lethbridge Loop mobile app.

Temporary ‘no parking’ signs will be posted on specific neighbourhoods the day before street sweepers arrive. Residents can also see progress of the program by viewing a new live street sweeping map.

The City of Lethbridge said night sweeping will be completed simultaneously, weather permitting, on arterial roads, downtown, and roads in the industrial area. Spring night sweeping will occur for about six to eight weeks from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. from Sundays to Thursdays, in order to avoid impeding traffic during the busier daytime hours.
