Red Deer RCMP officer involved in shooting

RED DEER, AB – An Alberta RCMP officer has been involved in a fatal shooting in Red Deer.

The RCMP says at around 4:30 p.m. on April 13th, 2023, members of the Red Deer detachment responded to a complaint of a male threatening to harm individuals with a knife inside a residence.

Police say an altercation with the man occurred when RCMP arrived. As a result, one officer discharged their service pistol, and police say a 33-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were physically injured.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate. The Alberta RCMP is also conducting an internal review to gather a full account of what took place during the incident. The RCMP said training, policy, police response, and the duty status of all members involved will be subject to the review.
