LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has charged a man in connection with two armed robberies at the same bank.

Police said the incidents occurred on March 17 and April 11, 2023 at a CIBC along the 500 block of 13 Street North. According to the LPS, in both cases, the suspect entered the bank, allegedly pointed a firearm at employees and demanded money. Officials noted that the suspect fled with undisclosed amounts of cash. No injuries were reported in either incident.

Following the second case, police said a suspect vehicle with distinctive features was identified. The LPS later located the vehicle and identified the suspect.

On April 25, 2023, the suspect was arrested without incident. Police subsequently executed a search warrant at a residence along Waterton Road South, along with two vehicles. The LPS said officers seized two firearms, including a handgun consistent with the weapon used in the robberies. Police noted that officers also seized Canadian currency with serial numbers “that matched money stolen during the first robbery” and clothing that was consistent with surveillance images of the suspect.

Jamie Gerard Bagu, 51, is charged with two counts each of robbery with a firearm, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public, pointing a firearm, use of a firearm while committing an offence, disguised with intent and one count each of assault with a weapon, and unsafe storage of a firearm.

Bagu has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on April 28, 2023.
