LETHBRIDGE, AB – Shannon Phillips is looking to remain the MLA for Lethbridge-West.

She is running for the re-election with the NDP in the 2023 Alberta provincial election.

Phillips provided the following answers to LNN’s Meet the Candidates questionnaire:

Why did you decide to run in this election and why for your party?

As the MLA for Lethbridge-West for the last eight years, I am dedicated to building a better future for the people in this riding and in the province. People in Lethbridge work hard every day, but over the last four years, the UCP has only made life harder and more expensive for them.

Healthcare here is collapsing under the UCP, and for four years, one-third of people in the city haven’t had access to a family doctor. Now, Danielle Smith wants to make more Albertans pay out-of-pocket for healthcare services, and that’s not going to help when inflation and hospital wait times are already out of control.

Rachel Notley and the Alberta NDP have the best plan forward for healthcare and for the economy to get us out of the hole that the UCP have dug us farther into. We have plans for better public healthcare, to lower the cost of living, and to build a stronger and more resilient economy that will have exciting opportunities in Lethbridge for generations to come.

Why do you feel that you are the best choice to represent your riding as MLA?

I understand what’s needed to get the job done for the people of Lethbridge-West. With an Alberta NDP government, people in Lethbridge can count on better public healthcare which includes more access to family doctors and the expansion of cardiac services in the Chinook Regional Hospital. Lethbridge can also count on a stable, competent, and caring government with the Alberta NDP that will never gamble with their pension or fire the RCMP.

What types of personal or professional experience do you have that would make you a good MLA?

I have been dedicated to the people of Lethbridge-West for the last eight years as their MLA and will continue to work for the people in this riding so they can get access to healthcare, afford their bills at the end of the month, and have exciting good-paying job opportunities for the future.

What would be your top three priorities if elected?

My main priority is the people of Lethbridge-West. With the Alberta NDP and Rachel Notley I’m dedicated to fixing the chaos in our hospitals so people have access to health care when and where they need it. I will work towards lowering the cost of living and bringing down bills that the UCP have ballooned over the last four years by lifting caps on auto insurance and utilities. Lastly, I will focus on creating good-paying jobs and a resilient economy that will bring in investment into our energy, agriculture and technology sectors.

What else should voters know about you and your campaign?

Rachel Notley and the Alberta NDP have the best plan for healthcare and the economy of Alberta, and will be a stable, caring and competent government. We will end the chaos caused by Danielle Smith and the UCP, and make sure people in Lethbridge have a government they can trust once again.
