COALDALE, AB – An electricity distribution provider in southern Alberta has opened a new building in the region.

FortisAlberta has relocated its operations centre from Lethbridge to Coaldale.

The company said that the nearly-20,000 square foot building follows net-zero standards, producing the same amount of clean energy, or more, than it will consume in a year.

The facility includes an array of solar panels on the roof and the back of the property, and includes eco-friendly materials, high-efficiency mechanical systems, and LED lighting.

FortisAlberta President and CEO Janine Sullivan said the new location allowed them to test net-zero building standards in an operational context.

“By integrating environmentally responsible design and construction standards with our specific operational requirements, we are demonstrating for our customers that net zero designs are achievable in a commercial and industrial setting,” said Sullivan.

According to FortisAlberta, the facility is situated on 6.7 acres of land and includes 11,000 square feet of shop space and 8,500 square feet of office space. A total of 32 employees work at the new centre in Coaldale.
