LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) has issued safety tips for hikers.
Officials noted that as the weather gets warmer and longer days set in, more people are going out into the coulees and river valley. LFES said its members have recently responded to several rescues of hikers in distress in the coulees of Lethbridge.
Responders have issued the following tips to ensure all hikers stay safe while enjoying the outdoors:
- Always make sure someone know where you are going and when you plan to return, especially if you are hiking alone. LFES said it’s important to check in with that person after your hike.
- Bring plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout your hike, particularly during hotter days. Officials also advise wearing sunscreen and taking frequent breaks if needed.
- Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes with good traction.
- Be aware of the wildlife in the hiking area and give wildlife plenty of space.
- Bring a cell phone with a fully charged battery in the event you need to call for help.
- Stay within your limits. Officials advise hikers have a conversation with their physician before venturing out on their journey.
- Call 911 if emergency assistance is required. Provide the 911 emergency communications officers with the best information about your location to assist the emergency crews.
