Lethbridge seniors take a ride in new assisted E-Bike

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Seniors living at the Blue Sky Manor in Lethbridge are taking a spin on a brand-new assisted E-Bike.

The Green Acres Foundation has purchased four assisted E-Bikes stationed at different locations around the Lethbridge area and is offering residents a chance to feel the wind in their hair.

With help from last year’s Annual Green Acres Charity Golf Tournament, the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta and the Lions Club in Picture Butte, the non-profit housing body, was able to purchase some new rides for live-in seniors.

Dawna Coslovi, Green Acres Foundation CEO said, “We’re really excited to unveil this assisted bike for our residents. The residents get to sit right beside the driver so that they can have a conversation, and for some of our residents, they haven’t been on a bike for many, many years, so this really gives them freedom.”

The $20,000 specialty E-Bikes were ordered from Europe and only just arrived this spring.

Each bike comes equipped with two side-by-side seats so that staff, family and volunteers can take a senior out for a cruise around town.

Green Acres Residents are welcome to assist in pedaling, or for those faced with mobility challenges, a single slate comes down to rest their feet, so no pedaling is required.

Helmets and safety harnesses also keep riders strapped in and safe during their quick jaunt in the city.

“We’re hoping that this program will be used by volunteers,” explained Coslovi. “We’re hoping we can get some volunteers to come in and ride residents around or family members, they might want to come and take their loved ones for a little spin.”

Those that are interested in volunteering their time to take out a handful of seniors for a ride around the block this summer are welcome to sign up online or call 403-328-1155.
