LETHBRIDGE, AB – An Alberta-based bottle and can recycling company has partnered with the Canadian Red Cross and Alberta Animal Rescue Crew to support wildfire relief.

SkipTheDepot is described as an ‘Uber-like’ service that collects bottles and cans on users’ behalf and brings them to the bottle depot.

Once collected and counted, deposit refunds are sent via e-Transfer or donated to a non-profit of the user’s choosing.

With nearly 20,000 people in Alberta evacuated from their homes due to the 91 active wildfires in the province as of Wednesday, May 17, 2023, SkipTheDepot is offering customers the option to donate to Alberta wildfire relief efforts.

By using the promo code “2023WILDFIRE,” app users can donate 100 per cent of the value of their bottles and cans to organizations actively involved in wildfire relief starting May 17.

James Trask, CEO of SkipTheDepot, said in a release, “Our hearts go out to the communities impacted by the devastating wildfires in Alberta. We know how Albertans come together in a time of need and wanted to offer another donation avenue.”

According to Trask, SkipTheDepot customers have donated over $1.75 million to more than 1,700 Albertan charities, nonprofits, and schools, showcasing the impact of collective efforts.

The process to donate includes downloading the app, scheduling a pickup, and leaving bagged recyclables outside the door. A SkipTheDepot driver will then collect the items and the donation will be made out to the charity of the user’s choice.

For more information on how to donate, go to the SkipTheDepot website.
