LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge man faces charges in connection with what police have deemed a violent incident where a woman was allegedly held against her will.

On May 18, 2023, members of the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) responded to a residence along the 1500 block of 16 Avenue South. The LPS had received a report from the landlord that he had found an injured woman in the basement of the home.

The 30-year-old woman was transported by EMS to Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, where she was admitted for treatment of extensive injuries.

Police said the investigation by Patrols and the Violent Crimes Unit found that the woman had met the suspect earlier in the month outside of the city and had been driven to Lethbridge. The LPS reported that the victim was subsequently taken to the residence, was allegedly unlawfully confined and repeatedly sexually assaulted over the course of four days. The victim remains in hospital.

Bernard Alonzo Gibson, 59, of Lethbridge, is charged with aggravated sexual assault, unlawful confinement, and failing to comply with bail conditions stemming from a previous incident in March of 2023. Gibson is remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.

The investigation into the matter continues.
