University of Calgary Dinos win Canadian College World Series

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Calgary Dinos baseball team has come out victorious in Lethbridge at the 2023 Canadian College World Series.

The tournament began on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Spitz Stadium with a matinee game. The eight teams featured in the tournament were:

  • University of Fraser Valley Cascades
  • Okanagan College Coyotes
  • University of Calgary Dinos
  • Vancouver Island University Mariners
  • Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs
  • Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack
  • Victoria Collegiate Golden Tide
  • Edmonton Collegiate Hawks

The Dinos capped off their perfect tournament with an 8-7 victory over the Victoria Collegiate Golden Tide. Dinos first baseman Zach Delaquis went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, adding three RBIs in the game.

The Dinos jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the fourth inning of the game on the back of pitcher Jordan Wielders. The Golden Tide began to strike back, putting up three runs in the 6th inning and two more in the eighth. The Dinos added one more in the eighth to give themselves a two-run cushion.

The Golden Tide brought the game within one run in the top of the ninth, but Dinos pitcher Alexander Lanigan closed the door with two strikeouts in a two inning save.

The win was the Dinos’ first Canadian College World Series win in the program’s history.

The Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs started their tournament strong with a 12-4 win over the Coyotes and a 12-2 victory over the Mariners. They lost their final round robin game 8-2 to the eventual champions.

In the playoffs, the Dawgs took on the Golden Tide looking to punch their ticket to the finals, but fell in an 11-10 slugfest.
