LETHBRIDGE, AB – Helen McMenamin is looking to become the MLA for Lethbridge-East.

She is running for the Alberta Liberal Party in the 2023 Alberta provincial election.

McMenamin provided the following answers to LNN’s Meet the Candidates questionnaire:

Why did you decide to run in this election and why for your party?

I care that Albertans, particularly in my home of Lethbridge East, should have an alternative to the two big parties who are constantly fighting instead of developing ways to improve life for Albertans. I believe voters deserve an alternative, positive politics. I believe in policies based on conversations – even with people we disagree with.

Why do you feel that you are the best choice to represent your riding as MLA?

I will listen and respond to the people of Lethbridge East, working with all my energy for them. As a senior, I am not aiming for a career. My constituents will be my full-time focus and I will not be discouraged by negative effects on myself. Public service is important to me.

What types of personal or professional experience do you have that would make you a good MLA?

I’m ready to learn new things, to work with others to find the best possible solution to the big challenges facing Albertans and the people of Lethbridge, and to bring these solutions into reality. It’s not going to be easy or simple. We’ll need to work hard, accept change and be innovative and listen to people with different views.

I have an optimistic attitude that helps me take on and keep working on difficult tasks. I enjoy people – with their quirks and foibles. I am tenacious and will keep on working at challenges even when solutions are not easily found.

What would be your top three priorities if elected?

Jobs and the economy, education, health care, especially mental health, among children as well as adults. The concerns of my constituents.

What else should voters know about you and your campaign?

I’m offering an alternative to the fighting of the big two parties – sensible, respectful conversations and responsive public service.
