Upcoming fill a truck event to raise funds for Diabetes Canada

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Diabetes Canada is holding a pick-up event for gently used clothes and household items on the morning of Saturday, May 27, 2023.

The event will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Real Canadian Superstore at 3515 Mayor Magrath Dr South. Trucks will be on-site to collect items, with proceeds going to support diabetes research. The event is one of many being held nationwide.

Sean Shannon, President and CEO of National Diabetes Trust, said, “At this time of year, people are de-cluttering their closets and around the house, which is the perfect time to donate your unwanted items to Diabetes Canada instead of sending them to a landfill.”

Diabetes Canada began running the pick up events during the COVID-19 pandemic, and continued after the organization realized that the need for the items and diabetes funding was still there.

In addition to funding research, Diabetes Canada is also putting funds towards giving children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes the opportunity to attend summer camps put on by the organization.

Shannon said, “It’s a wonderful opportunity and notion for young children with type 1 diabetes because they are constantly having to monitor their insulin levels and giving themselves, in one way shape or form, their insulin injections.”

He added, “There are camps where the only other people there are children with type 1 diabetes, so it’s really a wonderful environment for kids to go and have all the fun you would have at a summer camp on a lake, but done under the proper oversight of professionals, doctors and nurses.”

Those that cannot make it out to the community clothing donation drive-thru can donate used clothing at one of the charity’s donation bins. More information about what small household items can be donated can be found on the company’s website.
