Lethbridge mayor issues response to provincial election

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The mayor of Lethbridge has issued a response to the 2023 provincial election.

On Monday, May 29, 2023, the United Conservative Party was projected to have won a majority government. Results from the provincial election become official on Thursday, June 8.

In addition to congratulating Nathan Neudorf and Shannon Phillips, the projected winners in the ridings of Lethbridge-East and Lethbridge-West, Blaine Hyggen commended all those who put their names forward during the campaign, not just in Lethbridge but throughout all of Alberta.

“These campaigns aren’t always easy,” he said.

“To be able to see as many people that put their names forward and obviously, not everyone can be successful, so to be able to see them put their names forward and go through this process is admirable.”

Hyggen said he’s looking forward to working with local representatives.

He noted, “The number one thing I want to make sure we do is, we got a lot of promises before the writ was dropped, and I want to make sure that we follow up on these and we make sure that these campaign promises are realized.”

Some of the issues Hyggen wants to discuss with the provincial government include homelessness, addictions, and policing. The mayor also addressed a Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Unit for Lethbridge, which was given the thumbs up by the Government of Alberta in late April, prior to the start of the election campaign.

“The SCAN Unit was promised. That’s something that will definitely create safer neighbourhoods and so, looking forward to that. That is [a] part that will definitely help with the resources that are required within our community to catch those individuals that are preying on those most vulnerable within our community, so having that SCAN Unit here is extremely important.”
