Southern Alberta firefighters take part in stair climb challenge

CALGARY, AB – Two Lethbridge firefighters traveled up to Calgary on the weekend to take part in a physical challenge and fundraiser.

The ninth annual Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge was held in Calgary on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at the city’s tallest tower, Brookfield Place. Participating firefighters climbed the 57-story, 1,370 step building in their gear to raise money for Wellspring Alberta, a cancer support organization.

Lethbridge firefighters Carl Mix and Antony Smith took part in the event, which Mix said is important to do to since cancer affects most people.

Mix explained, “Whether we’re on shift or off-shift, our job is to take care of the community, and this stair climb provided us an excellent opportunity to raise funds for those who need it. Cancer hits all of us in some way or another, whether that be a friend or family member, and it was really nice to be able to have this opportunity to raise some money towards the good cause that helps people in need.”

Mix also added that members of Picture Butte Emergency Services took part in the event, and the climb provided a good chance to bond with other firefighters who work nearby.

He said, “It was good to work as a team, and to work with some of the other departments around that we work with to build up that camaraderie as well.”

Admission into the event was also a fundraiser. According to the Calgary Stair Climb website, a $50 donation secures the spot for each participant, and they need to fundraise a minimum of $250 to take part in the event.

The Canadian Cancer Society predicts 641 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer every day, and cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, responsible for 28.2% of all deaths.
