Jun 16, 2023 | 1:15 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Canada’s population has passed 40 million people.

That’s according to the real-time Canada’s Population clock model, run by Statistics Canada, who tracked the 40 million milestone early in the afternoon on June 16, 2023.

The clock keeps a tally of births, deaths, immigrants, emigrants, non-permanent residents and inter-provincial migrants. The tracker also keeps count of the population of every province and territory.

Statistics Canada said on its website that the numbers are calculated using the most recent population estimates available to them.

Canada reportedly added over one million new residents in a one-year span from January 2022 to January 2023 for a rate at 2.7 per cent, which is the highest percentage increase in the country since 1957, when it was at 3.3 percent.

At the time of this publication, Alberta currently sits at a population of 4,731,325.
