LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College is offering more than 20 programs for youth this summer, and registration for the camps is now open.

A camp for 10 to 12-year-olds, titled Kakyosi, which means ‘how do we come to know’, will allow participants to be immersed in Blackfoot land-based learning.

Camp attendees will help put up a teepee, practice basic conversational Blackfoot language, identify traditional plants and their uses, make frybread and dry meat, and engage in storytelling. The camp will be led by Marni Hope, Indigenous student support and events coordinator at Lethbridge College.

Hope said, “This camp provides an opportunity to show how vital it is to understand one’s traditions and cultures. This understanding starts in one’s youth.”

Teenage gamers can sign up for the 3D Game Designer camp. The camp will allow attendees to learn about 3D game design by discovering the theory behind it and creating assets.

Miranda Hubbard, camp leader and Game Design Micro-credential project coordinator at the college said, “This camp will teach students valuable skills in coding, game design and 3D digital art, giving them hands-on experience and insight into game creation.”

Hubbard added, “Campers will use some of the best computers the college has to offer and create their very own game level to take home at the end of the week.”

The 3D Game Designer camp is open to 13 to 17-year-olds.

A Claymation Creators camp for seven to 10-year-olds will allow participants to work in groups to storyboard and produce their own stop motion animation short film.

Toby Drozdz, camp leader and instructional assistant in the college’s Centre for Technology, Environment and Design stated, “We’ll also mix in some outdoor activities and storytelling games to keep the creativity flowing!” A video showcase for family members will wrap up the Claymation Creators camp.

Cub Camp is a new option this summer and is for four to six-year-olds. Campers will get to take part in different events across campus, from arts and crafts to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities and outdoor adventures.

Lethbridge College will also offer returning camps like the Kodiaks volleyball and basketball development sessions, mountain biking, dance, construction, and culinary camps. The Forensic Explorers camp will return for its second year, and Ecosystem Explorers returns following a one-year hiatus.

A full list of available camps is at the Lethbridge College website.
