LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge-born player was selected in the first round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft on Wednesday, June 28.

Right winger Matthew Wood was selected 15th overall by the draft host Nashville Predators after an impressive freshman season at the University of Connecticut (UConn). In his inaugural NCAA season, the 6’4, 193 pound Wood had 34 points in 35 games, leading his team and earning himself a selection to Hockey East’s All-Rookie team.

Wood was born in Lethbridge, but moved to Nanaimo at a young age, playing for the Nanaimo Minor Hockey Association.

He then joined the Victoria Grizzlies of the British Columbia Hockey League, putting up 50 goals and 98 points in 64 games over parts of two seasons before committing to UConn. Wood was the youngest player in NCAA hockey last season.

Following his selection, Wood will likely return to UConn for his sophomore season, unless he makes the Predators roster out of training camp.

Rounds two through seven of the 2023 NHL Draft continue on June 29.
