NHL draft sees two Lethbridge natives, one Hurricane selected

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The 2023 NHL Entry Draft has concluded, with three picks connected to Lethbridge.

In the first round, Lethbridge-born winger Matthew Wood was selected 15th overall by the draft host Nashville Predators. His selection came after he has scored 34 points in 35 games for the University of Connecticut, earning himself a selection to the Hockey East’s All-Rookie team.

Lethbridge Hurricanes defenceman Noah Chadwick was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the sixth round, 185th overall. The 6’4, 187 pound rearguard spent parts of two seasons with the Hurricanes, putting up seven goals and 23 points in 80 games with the club.

In the seventh round, Lethbridge native Emmitt Finnie was taken by the Detroit Red Wings with the 201st overall pick. Finnie had 35 points in 64 games for the Kamloops Blazers in 2022-23, and added four goals and seven points in 14 playoff games.

Overall, 33 Western Hockey League players were selected in the 2023 draft, and a full list can be found on the WHL’s website.
