LETHBRIDGE, AB – UPDATE: (1:00 p.m. June 29): The City of Lethbridge said all lanes of Whoop-Up Drive have re-opened and road repairs have been completed.

Original story:

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has issued tickets to the drivers of vehicles involved in multiple traffic incidents on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

At approximately 4:23 p.m., police responded to multiple reports that a truck and trailer had rolled over in the westbound lanes of Whoop-Up Drive.

Upon arrival, police found significant damage to the truck, trailer, load and asphalt as well as spillage of hazardous fluids along with countless roofing nails, screws and other sharp roofing parts the truck had been hauling.

A subsequent investigation by Alberta Sheriffs and LPS found the truck and trailer had multiple equipment violations, leading to the driver being charged under the Traffic Safety Act.

A 29-year-old Lethbridge man is charged with operating a trailer without a properly functioning emergency brake system, emergency break away cable not properly connected to the towing unit, towing a trailer without proper attachments and exceeding the certificate weight.

The rollover closed the westbound lanes of Whoop-Up drive, causing delays and congestion on Highway 3/Crowsnest Trail.

In addition to the rollover, a chain reaction collision also took place in the westbound lanes of Crowsnest Trail on the Oldman River bridge at around 5:22 p.m., leading to further delays as crews attended to the scene.

Police reported that the lead vehicle had stopped for traffic, but numerous vehicles behind did not, leading to the 10 vehicle collision.

At 5:30, a semi-truck travelling eastbound on Highway 3 rear-ended another semi-truck and received significant damage as a result. The eastbound lanes of Highway 3 were subsequently closed for a short period of time while the vehicles were cleared.

A 39-year-old man from Cardston was charged under the Traffic Safety Act with following too closely.

LPS will not provide the names of those charged since they are provincial statutes and not mandatory court appearances.

LPS is reminding drivers to ensure adequate space between vehicles and keep their focus on the roads.
