CLARESHOLM, AB – Environment Canada is advising residents in the region to take steps to remain cool and hydrated.

The weather agency has issued a heat warning for several communities in southern Alberta, including Claresholm, High River, Calgary, Brooks, Medicine Hat, and Drumheller.

They say daytime high temperatures near 30 degrees Celsius combined with overnight lows near 14 degrees will continue throughout the day on Monday, July 10, 2023.

Temperatures are expected to moderate on Tuesday.

Although Lethbridge is not one of the communities listed in the heat warning, the forecasted high for Monday is 31 degrees Celsius and the low is 13. There is a 30 per cent chance of showers during the day in the city and with rain and a risk of thunderstorms overnight.

Some tips from Environment Canada to reduce heat-related conditions include rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler times of the day, taking frequent breaks from the heat, drinking plenty of water and other non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated beverages, and not leaving pets or children in your vehicle.

The public is asked to watch for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion such as high body temperature, confusion, fainting, unconsciousness, and a lack of sweat.

People who are at a higher risk of complications due to high heat include infants, children, seniors, and individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers, as well as those who are socially isolated.
