LETHBRIDGE, AB – Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of Alberta, including Lethbridge.

The agency said on Monday, July 10, 2023, that conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that could produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Severe thunderstorms are anticipated to develop in the afternoon and persist into Tuesday evening.

Environment Canada has advised that strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees, and overturn large vehicles. Severe thunderstorms can also produce tornadoes, while heavy rainfall can cause flash flooding and water pooling on roads.

Other areas under a severe thunderstorm watch include the Okotoks-High River-Claresholm region, Taber and Milk River, and the Cardston-Fort Macleod-Magrath region. A full list of impacted areas is available from Environment Canada.

Meanwhile, many parts of the province are under a heat warning, including the Okotoks-High River-Claresholm region. Residents in areas impacted by the heat warning are advised to stay indoors, drink plenty of water and avoid leaving pets and children in vehicles.
