Campaign aims to plant 1,000 trees in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has announced a new tree-planting initiative.

At the root of the 1,000 Trees in 2023 campaign, the municipality is branching out into new ways of improving the community’s climate resiliency.

Residents are encouraged to plant and care for trees on their private property.

Paige Rosner, Environmental Education and Community Projects Lead at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre, said engaged citizens have always been vital stewards of the urban forest.

She adds that this is something important for the future.

“Planting a tree is more than a gardening activity; it’s a legacy project,” said Rosner. A tree planted today will make its greatest impact 30-50 years from now, providing shade, beauty, and ecological benefits to future generations.”

From a news release from the City of Lethbridge, trees can also reduce energy costs for heating and cooling buildings, cleaning the air by removing pollutants, and mitigating the severity and frequency of flooding.

The city’s 1,000 trees webpage gives suggestions for different types of trees that can be planted, how to plant and care for them, and the importance of doing so. Trees can be registered on the page.
