AMA, Kal Tire and police services partner to combat catalytic converter theft

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) and Kal Tire are collaborating to help reduce catalytic converter theft.

Until August 31, 2023, Kal Tire locations in Alberta are offering catalytic converter engraving as part of the partnership between the company, AMA and local law enforcement agencies.

The process involves engraving the vehicle identification number (VIN) onto the catalytic converter, which Superintendent Derek McIntyre with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said helps police track stolen parts.

McIntyre said, “If the auto part is stolen, police now have the means of linking it back to the crime and holding thieves and scrap metal recyclers accountable. We want to make it impossible for thieves to make money from this crime of opportunity, and we are very grateful for the support of the AMA and Kal Tire in helping us address this multimillion-dollar problem.”

The initiative comes after a successful pilot project earlier this year between Kal Tire and the Calgary Police Service (CPS).

A survey by AMA showed that nine in 10 Albertans are aware of the increase in catalytic converter theft, but just three in 10 people think it will happen to them. EPS also reported an 80 per cent increase in catalytic converter theft between 2020 and 2022.

Sgt. Liam Breedon with the Lethbridge Police Service said, “This type of crime has been increasing and has a significant impact on communities across the province.”

Breedon added, “Taking part in this program is one important step that brings awareness to the issue, and provides an important tool to help us investigate and track these offences.”

At-cost engraving is being offered at $40 per vehicle, and $20 for each additional engraving required on vehicles with more than one converter. AMA members will get a five per cent discount on the service.
