Submissions remain open for Canada-wide lake photo challenge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Voting in a Canada-wide photo challenge is set to open next month.

July marks Lakes Appreciation Month. As the month approaches its end, so does Living Lakes Canada’s third annual Lake Biodiversity Photo Challenge.

The organization said hundreds of photos of lakes have been submitted from coast to coast, and the challenge is a way to celebrate the beauty of lakes across the country, while also raising awareness about what is threatening their biodiversity.

Photos can be submitted online until July 31, 2023.

Beginning August 1, residents can vote for their favourite photo in each category. Images can be seen at the 2023 online gallery. Online voting will be open until August 30.

The public favourites will be announced in early September, along with favourite photos from competition judges. The judging panel is made up of Living Lakes Canada team members and prize sponsors. All winners will receive prize packs courtesy of partners Lush Cosmetics, Kicking Horse Coffee, Teadore Co., Earth Rangers, Laykhaus, and Float-Eh.

The Lake Biodiversity Photo Challenge is the sister event to the National Lake Blitz, which is a cross-Canada citizen science program. For the 2023 Lake Blitz, 442 volunteers registered to monitor 273 lakes in nine provinces and one territory. Participants received kits and instructions on how to monitor their chosen lake twice a month from May to September. An interactive Lake Observation Map is available online to track which lakes are being monitored.

Both the photo challenge and Lake Blitz are made possible thanks to funding from the RBC Tech for Nature grant.
