Tourism Lethbridge teams with filmmakers to highlight local Indigenous experiences

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Tourism Lethbridge has partnered with a couple of filmmakers to shine a light on local Indigenous culture, art and experiences.

The organization has announced the procurement of two contracts with local Indigenous filmmakers who will create short-form video and social media content.

The contracted filmmakers are Jared Wolf Child and Shawanda Backfat.

Tourism Lethbridge said the two were chosen from a pool of talented creators who attended a five-day workshop, which focused on empowering Indigenous filmmakers. The workshop helped attendees develop their skills with guidance from industry experts.

The projects Wolf Child and Backfat will collaborate with Tourism Lethbridge on will highlight Indigenous cultural experiences in Lethbridge.

Wolf Child said, “I’m excited and honoured to be given a platform to share my story and culture. There’s so much incredible Indigenous culture in Southern Alberta, and I look forward to informing others on all that indigenous tourism has to offer.”

Tourism Lethbridge said it will ensure that “a clear, personal, and holistically Indigenous perspective is nurtured through the duration of both projects.”

The projects will focus on specific attractions or experiences relating to Indigenous culture and perspectives that can only be found in southern Alberta.

Thomas Miller, Digital Content Specialist for Tourism Lethbridge said, “Indigenous Tourism is a bourgeoning sector of the tourism industry in Canada, and Tourism Lethbridge is incredibly honoured to be collaborating closely with partners and other organizations to continue to help nurture and grow this industry sector and promote our amazing people and region.”

Both contracts are funded through grants from Travel Alberta.
