Fire Restriction in effect for Lethbridge County

Jul 21, 2023 | 2:36 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge County has issued a Fire Restriction effective at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 21, 2023.

Hot, dry conditions are forecast to continue into next week, increasing the risk of fire spread. Under the fire restriction, all active fire and fireworks permits are cancelled and no new ones will be issued until further notice.

The restriction has been issued to prevent wildfires during the record-breaking wildfire season in Canada.

Byron Fraser, Lethbridge County Fire Services Manager said, “With temperatures forecasted to remain high, and no precipitation anticipated in the coming days, we expect the wildfire risk to increase. We are asking the public to be aware of this risk and take actions to prevent them.”

Recreational campfires, such as campground and backyard fire pits, are still allowed to be used, as are propane fires, barbecues, stoves and heaters.

The county is urging those using fire pits to ensure the fire is completely out when leaving, and never leave it unattended. Farmers are asked to check their equipment before use, and always have a water truck available if possible.
