Tony Bennett is being remembered as the last of the greatest generation of singers and musicians.

The singer whose signature hits included “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” died today at the age of 96 in New York.

In the early ’60s when his career was in a lull, two unknowns gave Bennett’s musical director some sheet music that he stuck in a dresser drawer and forgot about until he was packing for a tour that included a stop in San Francisco.

Bennett says Ralph Sharon saw some sheet music in his shirt drawer and on top of the pile was a song called “I Left My Heart In San Francisco.”

When they were rehearsing in a club in Little Rock, Arkansas the bartender said — “If you record that song, I’m going to be the first to buy it.”
