LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge held a ceremony on Saturday, July 22, 2023, as a skate park was officially renamed.

The City announced in November 2022 that the SLP Skate Park would be renamed to the Wade Galloway Skate Park and the Grand Renaming Ceremony was held at the park on Saturday.

The Park is named after former Lethbridge councillor Wade Galloway, who was elected as a councillor in 2013 before passing away in February 2014. The development of the SLP Skate Park was a passion project for Galloway.

Bill Galloway, Wade’s father said the day was bitter sweet. Galloway said he is happy to see his son’s name on the park that many will use.

He added, “[Wade] wanted to ensure that his family, and the family of all others had a proper place to enjoy the sport. That’s what drove him and eventually he wound up in the construction of this park.”

The renaming event featured a ribbon cutting ceremony, a barbecue and learn to skate opportunities from Boarderline Skate Shop, Wade Galloway’s company.

A sponsorship agreement was also reached in November 2022 with the Wade Galloway Legacy Foundation. The agreement is 20-year deal at $12,500 per year for the first 10 years, followed by $15,000 per year for the next 10 years, for a total commitment of $275,000.

Lethbridge mayor Blaine Hyggen was elected onto city council alongside Galloway in 2013, and he said the funding to maintain and improve the park is a great way to honour Galloway’s legacy.

Hyggen added, “This is a great facility for our community and I’m thrilled that it now bears his name.”
