Heat records broken in Alberta on Monday

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A number of hot weather records were broken in Alberta on Monday, July 24, 2023.

The following areas set or tied a daily maximum temperature record on Monday.

Medicine Hat area

  • Tied record of 38.9 degrees Celsius set in 1890

Calgary area

  • New record of 35.1 degrees Celsius – old record of 33.9 degrees Celsius was set in 1890

Drumheller area

  • New record of 36.9 degrees Celsius – old record of 35.0 degrees Celsius was set in 1936

Lethbridge area

  • New record of 36.9 degrees Celsius – old record of 34.4 degrees Celsius was set in 1904

Pincher Creek area

  • New record of 35.6 degrees Celsius – old record of 32.8 degrees Celsius was set in 1905

Taber area

  • New record of 37.7 degrees Celsius – old record of 34.5 degrees Celsius was set in 2007

Waterton Park area

  • New record of 34.3 degrees Celsius – old record of 31.0 degrees Celsius was set in 1988

TORNADO NEAR WILDWOOD

There was also a confirmed tornado near the hamlet of Wildwood, about 120 kilometres west of Edmonton, at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday.

There have been no reports of damage specific to the tornado as of Tuesday morning, July 25. Officials note a second tornado may have occurred earlier in the evening.

At about 6:05 p.m., a funnel cloud was reported near Cynthia, Alberta, associated with a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado.

Cynthia is about 165 km west of Edmonton and 50 km south of Wildwood.

Meteorologists are seeking pictures of the tornadoes and any damage they may have caused.
