Local players invited to Hockey Canada meetings ahead of major tournaments

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Two Lethbridge Hurricanes were invited to Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence summer meetings.

The meetings are held in preparation for the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, and the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship. Both Hurricanes players were invited to participate for the former tournament.

The two Hurricanes players invited are goaltender Koen Cleaver and defenceman Will Sharpe.

Cleaver joined the Hurricanes in the 2022-23 season after two years with Pacific Coast Academy prep teams, and appeared in two games for Lethbridge.

Sharpe also played just two games for the Hurricanes, and he joined the team after three seasons with the Yale Hockey Academy prep teams.

In addition to the Hurricanes players, a southern Alberta native was also invited to the camps. Prince George Cougars goaltender Ty Young is from Coaldale, and was invited to the meetings in preparation for the 2024 World Juniors.

In total, 37 Western Hockey League prospects were invited to attend the two camps, with 19 of the league’s 22 teams represented.

The 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge takes place in Charlottetown and Summerside, Prince Edward island from November 4 to 11. The 2024 World Juniors are being held in Gothenburg, Sweden from December 26, 2023 to January 5, 2024.
