Three dead following collision west of Medicine Hat

CYPRESS COUNTY, AB – The RCMP is continuing to investigate a fatal single-vehicle collision in southern Alberta.

At approximately 1:00 a.m. on Monday, July 31, 2023, Redcliff RCMP was called to a report that a vehicle had driven off of a road and into the St. Mary’s Irrigation District Canal.

The collision occurred in the area of Highway 523 and Range Road 73 in Cypress County, west of Medicine Hat.

Officers say there were four occupants in the vehicle and one of them was able to get out and call 911 from a nearby home. Crews from Cypress County Fire, Medicine Hat Fire Aquatic Rescue, and EMS were dispatched alongside the RCMP.

The vehicle was located and was submerged on its roof.

The three remaining occupants were all declared deceased on scene. They include a 28-year-old man from Medicine Hat, a 21-year-old woman from Medicine Hat, and a 21-year-old woman from Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

The RCMP Collision Reconstructionist attended the scene and is continuing to investigate. No further details are being released at this time.

The RCMP extends its condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.
