Extreme fire danger rating in Alberta foothills, Banff

Aug 2, 2023 | 8:41 AM

BANFF, AB – The public is being warned about a “very serious” risk of forest fires in the far western edge of southern Alberta.

The Government of Alberta has updated its fire danger ratings for Wednesday, August 2, 2023, issuing an “extreme” rating for the foothills.

In Alberta, this includes Banff National Park and the Crowsnest Pass, as well as areas in between the two.

On the other side of the provincial border, the B.C. Wildfire Service has declared extreme fire danger ratings for much of the East Kootenay region, including Kootenay and Yoho National Parks.

According to Alberta’s government, an extreme fire danger rating means that “Forest fuels are extremely dry and pose a very serious fire risk. Fast-spreading, high-intensity fires are likely, which are very difficult to control.”

Banff National Park told recreators in a tweet to keep campfires small and in designated fire pits, completely extinguish campfires, and dispose of cigarettes in appropriate receptacles.

Throughout many regions in southern Alberta, a variety of fire bans and restrictions are in effect. An interactive map with more details is available at AlbertaFireBans.ca
