COALDALE, AB – A potato processor in southern Alberta is helping to develop a new walking and cycling trail connecting Coaldale and Lethbridge.

The McCain Foundation has announced a donation of $200,000 to the Link Pathway Committee.

In a news release, the Link Pathway Committee highlighted the importance of the organization’s contribution.

“The McCain Foundation’s significant support will play a pivotal role in bringing this community-enhancing project to fruition,” reads a statement from the Link Pathway Committee. “The partnership with The McCain Foundation exemplifies their dedication to supporting initiatives that promote healthier, more vibrant communities where their employees live and work.”

The Link Pathway will be a 15 kilometre paved, barrier-free, accessible path between the two communities.

The donation from the McCain Foundation will be used for a variety of aspects of the project, including construction, safety enhancements, educational signage and community engagement initiatives.

Phase 1 of construction started in June 2023 and is set to be finished by the end of the year. The first phase is a 3.5 kilometre section between 30 Street in Coaldale and an area just before Highway 512.

With adequate funding, the second phase, which would cover the remaining portions of the pathway, could commence in 2024.

This is not the first significant donation to the Link Pathway, as Cor Van Raay announced $1 million for the project in 2021.
