Lethbridge man sentenced to seven years in baby abuse case

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) said that on January 18, 2023, officers were called to a home on the north side of the city to check on the welfare of a six-week-old girl.

The LPS claimed to have received information that suggested the child was being abused.

The baby was taken to hospital in Lethbridge before being transferred to a medical facility in Calgary. She was discharged in April. A publication ban imposed by the court prevents the release of any information that could identify the victim, including identifying the man sentenced.

A joint submission on sentencing from the crown and defense suggested a seven-year sentence for the man.

The man was given a maximum five-year sentence for the former charge and the maximum seven-year sentence for the latter. He will serve both sentences concurrently.

He will serve 2,255 days in prison, with credit for 300 days already served.

A Lethbridge woman also plead guilty to one count of failing to provide the necessaries of life on June 16, 2023, in relation to the case. She will appear in court in Lethbridge on Friday, August 18, 2023, for sentencing.
