COALHURST, AB – The RCMP has laid charges against two minors who were reportedly involved in a pre-planned fight that involved the use of weapons.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2023, officers received multiple reports that two groups of people were fighting at the spray park in Coalhurst.

According to the RCMP, one group included a 16-year-old boy armed with a baseball bat and a 14-year-old boy who had a knife. The second group included a 17-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man, neither of whom had weapons.

“Investigation revealed that both groups initially agreed to meet at the spray park for a consensual fight,” reads a media release from the RCMP. “A witness saw the interaction and left his yard to intervene. He took the baseball bat away from one male, who then punched the witness several times in the head.”

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with one count each of assault and assault with a weapon as well as three counts of failure to comply with probation. He has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice on September 13, 2023.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with two counts each of assault with a weapon and failure to comply with probation, as well as one count each of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and disobeying a court order. He has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice on August 23, 2023.

As the suspects are minors, their names cannot be released due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The two other people were not charged as they did not have weapons.

The RCMP said in a news release, “This incident was a pre-planned fight by both parties and is not the result of unprovoked or gang violence and as such it is not expected to be an ongoing public safety issue.”
